The first vineyard started on Long Island was Hargrave Vineyards, now under the ownership of Italian prince, Marco Borghese, and operating under its present name of Castello di Borghese. Also located in Cutchogue is another one of the oldest vineyards of Long Island.
Bedell Cellars, a 30-year old estate, still operates under its original name, even under new ownership. In 2000, Bedell Cellars was purchased by Michael Lynne. If the name sounds familiar, you have probably spotted his credit lines in numerous films, including the role of executive producer of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Also a respected art collector, part of his collection adorns the interior throughout the winery’s tasting room. The label designs for Bedell Cellars' wines are created by internationally renowned artist Barbara Kruger. The art of the grape is not only reflected throughout the winery and on every bottle, however. The sublime flavor of each wine is a work of art itself.
The creative winemaker is none other than Rich-Olsen Harbich, who is also noted for drafting the North Fork of Long Island appellation. He has produced some of the most highly esteemed wines from this region, including those of his coveted Artist series. Harbich’s creativity and devotion to producing consistently outstanding wines combines with the elements of sustainable viticultural farming practices, natural winemaking techniques and the use of indigenous yeasts to empower Bedell Cellars in its unwavering commitment to excellence.
The tasting room occupies a renovated potato barn that was originally constructed in 1919. The building now houses a state of the art winery and multiple-level seating areas for guests to relax and indulge. An outdoor mahogany wood tasting pavilion was completed in 2005 to offer breathtaking views of the sweeping expanse of over 80 acres of vineyard and farmland.
Bedell Cellar’s flagship red blend is their Musee, a spectacular, luscious, smooth and fruity wine that earned a score of 91 in Wine Spectator. This score matched the highest scores in winemaking history to ever be given to wines produced in America’s northeast. If, on the other hand, a bottle of white is what you crave, their Gallery is an outstanding white blend that is aged in both French oak and stainless steel barrels.
The 2013 United States presidential inauguration could be the historical event that elevated Long Island wines to newly appreciated heights. Bedell Cellars’ 2009 merlot was poured with the entrée course at the inauguration luncheon, the first New York wine in history ever uncorked at such an event. Throughout the ensuing weeks, visitors flocked to the vineyard in droves, requesting cases of the merlot to purchase, most of them bypassing a preliminary tasting before their transaction.
Wine Business Monthly dubbed Bedell Cellars as one of the Top 10 Hottest Small Brands worldwide. From the cabernet franc and merlot to their Gallery and Musee, all who stop in and try one of their sample flights confirm immediately the excellence of Bedell Cellars’ portfolio. Bedell Cellars also grows and produces the Corey Creek Vineyard label. Corey Creek Vineyards is located in Southold.
