Heading along the highly travelled route of Sound Avenue into the gateway of Long Island's wine scene, the approaching restaurant and shopping complex that is home to The Lobster Roll Northside now beckons food lovers, wine connoisseurs and craft beer aficionados to its recent addition. The North Fork Tasting Room sits adjacent to Lobster Roll Northside. Chef Fred Terry, who owns both establishments, opened The North Fork Tasting Room in 2012 with the goal of offering visitors a taste of Long Island. The complex is situated across from the Terry family farm. The North Fork Tasting Room is a renovated 100-year old barn that retains much of the rustic country charm.
The North Fork Tasting Room offers a selection of wines and craft beers produced locally. The wines, which may be purchased by the glass, include a diverse sampling from the vineyards of Long Island's east end. The beers, some of which are available on tap and others in bottles, hail from the rapidly multiplying microbreweries across Long Island and into Brooklyn. Tasting flights are available for both the wines and the beers. The wine tastings help to promote the wineries and prompt tourism along the north fork wine trail. The friendly and knowledgeable staff can provide you with maps and brochures for the wineries to get you started as you embark on your quest.
Terry’s vision for his latest venture is a modest one, with his passion for playing in the kitchen remaining his primary focus. Although it is a location for sampling wines and beers, for him it’s more about the food. The bistro kitchen menu lists a respectable choice of savory edibles, all boasting a local flavor. It's fare with local flair, including such classics as lobster roll sandwiches and clam chowder, seafood-packed delights such as seafood macaroni and cheese and seafood chili, a host of artisanal appetizers such as flatbreads topped with apricot jam and duck, and home style desserts. With the easy access to The Lobster Roll Northside's kitchen, Mr. Terry reproduces many of the menu items from old family recipes, including smoked fish, seasoned butter, wild rhubarb sauce, turnips chips and huckleberry pie. Chef Terry revels in his culinary artistry, perfecting new recipes as well as reviving the old and all utilizing the best that Long Island’s agricultural scene has to offer. Seeking willing samplers, he generously shares his creations with guests at the bar. On my last visit, my palate was mesmerized by the amazing combination of flatbread blanketed with smoked duck, a local goat cheese from the Catapano Dairy Farm and sweet local peppers. The North Fork Tasting Room also offers a catering menu for private affairs held in their dining room. The dining room is now open for diners who crave an alternative to the renowned seafood haven next door.
In addition to introducing tourists to the Long Island wine scene and other local flavors and conjuring up his familial heirloom recipes, Terry's goal is to sell locally produced edibles including lobster and seafood salads, artisan cheese boards, baked goods, oils and vinegars, condiments and sauces.
Weekend nights showcase the talents of local musicians that perform regularly. Events include informative wine and beer and cooking events as well as occasional themed gatherings.
During the eastern north fork's peak summer and fall season when diners flock to The Lobster Roll Northside to be faced with lengthy waits to be seated, The North Fork Tasting Room provides the perfect environ to pass the time while you wait. Select a glass of wine or a pint glass and remain seated at the bar, sampling bites of local delicacies, stroll along the store fronts of the complex or have a seat outside with your libation until your table is ready. Once you are called to dine, you may carry your drink with you to the table to continue sipping as you contemplate your order.
The North Fork Tasting Room is located on Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow, behind The Lobster Roll Northside and next to The Gingerbread Academy, also owned by Terry.
