It's time to don your lederhosen and dirndls, lift a froth-topped mug and celebrate Oktobefest in Bavarian splendor. Oktoberfest is the 16-day celebration that has been held in Munich, Germany each year since 1810, the year when the German royal wedding of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese took place and the first Oktoberfest celebration was born. Since then, German communities throughout the world continue to revel in their heritage as they partake in the annual festivities that officially begin in late September and conclude in early October, although many devoted celebrants extend their merriment throughout the entire month of October. This year's Oktoberfest runs from September 20 through October 5, but one restaurant on Long Island promotes the Oktoberfest ambience all year.
The Village Lanterne first opened its doors in 2007 under the ownership of the Lorch family. The restaurant moved to its present location earlier this year, where it is now situated next door to the Lorch family's other culinary success, the Black Forest Bakery. The new restaurant location affords an outdoor beer garden dining option. From the street, the building front looks somewhat nondescript, but once you cross the threshold, it is like stepping back in time into Old World German ambience and festivity.
Every corner, nook and cranny of the Village Lanterne's low-lit interior is decked out in full Bavarian decor and the servers are clad in traditional Bavarian garb, evoking the imagery of an Old World German pub. Live music adds to the celebratory atmosphere. The menu features classic, stick to your ribs German fare, such as Wiener schnitzel, assorted German sausages, sauerbraten and other recipes of owner Tom Lorch's mother, Ursula. Hearty appetites are sure to be satiated by the sizable portions of heavy and saucy dishes, including such appetizers as a stuffed pretzel or a beer-spiked cheese dip served with German sausages, soft pretzels, cauliflower and pickles. Be sure to order a German brew to wash down the first round of pretzel rolls that join diners at every table. The dessert menu features rich and luscious pastries, cakes and pies that are conveniently and freshly created at the Black Forest Bakery.
Whether you are celebrating your Germanic roots, seizing Oktoberfest as an opportunity to eat, drink and be merry, or feeling the pangs of cravings for brats and brew as the cooling October winds blow, the Village Lanterne provides a warming and uplifting atmosphere with authentic flavors from the German table. Raise your glass and shout a toast to the hearty and fulfilling foods that this German holiday has to offer, Prost!
The Village Lanterne is located at 155 North Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst. To get directions and browse the menu or entertainment schedule, visit www.thevillagelanterne.com
