Prepare to walk the grounds of Old Westbury Gardens in the after dark glow of over 5,000 grinning, grimacing and glowering jack-o-lanterns on display at the fourth annual Rise of the Jack-O-Lanterns.
When the sun does down and the moon peers through the highest barren tree branches, crowds flock to take in the creative artistry of these amazing hand-carved pumpkins. From the whimsical to the imaginative to the eerie, some of the pumpkins on display have been carved in dedication to a focal theme, celebrated scribe, entertainment celebrity or timely event. Last year's display featured a pair of jack-o-lanterns carved with the portraits of the presidential election opponents. The year prior to that showcased a jack-o-lantern of recently deceased Apple mogul Steve Jobs. From charming Disney characters, superheroes and cartoon favorites to such Halloween icons as hissing black cats with arched backs and bushy tails to creepy spiders, dedicated carvers and talented local artists have devoted hours of their time to create these images.
Last year’s event hosted more than 50,000 visitors and even displayed two pumpkins carved with marriage proposals, both of which resulted in the hoped for responses of yes. This year promises to be even better, offering food, music, more carving demonstrations and a lot more art on display.
New themes will be unveiled at this year's event. Among these themes will be a tribute to filmmaker Tim Burton, the hit television show “The Big Bang Theory” and, Yankees fans, be sure to look for a carving of Mariano Rivera. The walk takes place every Friday and Saturday evening throughout the months of October and November and it will take roughly one hour to navigate through all of the display paths. Don’t worry; you’ll have more than 5,000 flickering escorts along the way.
