It’s almost Valentine’s Day, an occasion to celebrate love with amorous cards, romantic dinners, cuddly stuffed animals, sparkling jewelry, thoughtful trinkets and, above all, decadent chocolate. If you have procrastinated thus far in your gifting quests, follow Cupid’s arrow in the direction of Greenlawn for an amazing selection of blissful chocolate indulgence.
The chocolate confections on display at Azure Chocolat are conjured by shop owner and chocolatier Heather Rushforth-Foley. Success is nothing new to Heather, having cut a dance record by the time she was twenty and become a corporate executive at thirty. Creativity is no stranger to her either, having worked her way through college by painting murals and having stirred some culinary artistry while cooking alongside her Italian grandmother. By the age of 40, Heather strove to take on the dual roles of mother and entrepreneur. She enrolled in the sweet curriculum of chocolate making at the Ecole Chocolat in Vancouver, B.C. and earned the certificate that enabled her to walk away from the grueling corporate life and open the doors of Azure Chocolat in Centerport in 2004. Six years later, the successful shop relocated to its present Greenlawn address.
Customers will be instantly smitten with the extensive variety of truffles, and challenged to pick and choose from over 25 different dark, milk, white and dairy-free vegan combinations. A number of spirited variations include raspberry red wine dark chocolate, dubbel dark ale dark chocolate and champagne and roses white chocolate. If the mocha melding of chocolate and java appeal to your significant other, try the coffee cardamom white chocolate or the pumpkin mocha latte milk chocolate. Perfect fruit and chocolate pairings have come together in truffles that incorporate bananas, apples, cherries and pomegranates. Nut lovers will revel in hazelnut, pistachio and peanut butter concoctions.
Browsing eyes will also be drawn to decadent barks, such as an orange peel dark chocolate bark, the Provencal almond bark and the scrumptious Beauty Bark, which is packed with health boosters and harmonizes the nuances of sweet blueberries, creamy dark chocolate, crunchy walnuts and sea salt. It is easy to be mesmerized by the tantalizing power of the cocoa bean, so stay focused on the holiday at hand and choose one of the red velvet heart-shaped gift boxes and some special Valentine-themed chocolate creations to your final selections. Other chocolate temptations include buttery toffee squares, chocolate-dipped fresh marshmallows, salted caramels and classic s’mores treats. If you plan on getting cozy with your sweetie for a romantic film, share a bowl of Azure munch, a delightful and addictive snack mix of popcorn tossed with sweet and salty toffee crunch and all three types of delectable Belgian chocolate.
If baked delicacies are your partner’s passion, consider the truffle brownies or the shortbread cookies, covered with chocolate and intricately decorated. The artistry from the oven is made possible by the talents of the shop’s general manager, chocolatier and baker, Allison Krueger. Dabbling with dough from the age of nine, she went on to pursue her passion at the Culinary Institute of America. She graduated with degrees in baking as well as pastry arts management, concentrations which have served her well since joining the Azure Chocolat family of confection creation in 2006.
When chocolate melts in the Azure Chocolat kitchen, magic happens. The quest to combine traditional treats with flavorful cultural contributions within these melting pots has earned Azure Chocolat the reputation of reigning as one of Long Island’s top chocolate shops. Heather’s passionate devotion to her creative craft is apparent in every display. Bring home a few boxes of love to treat your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day. After indulging in the excellence of just one truffle, you will undoubtedly be back for the chocolate bunnies of Easter.
