As we kick off the holiday season, we begin to ponder many of the long-celebrated Thanksgiving weekend traditions. After the post-turkey, tryptophan- induced comas in front of the Thanksgiving Day football games, discussions turn to plans for the rest of the weekend. Decking the halls for Christmas and embarking on gift-shopping quests both rank high on the list. If you dread the notion of fighting through cranky crowds and packed parking lots, throw tradition to the wind and celebrate Black Friday in a relaxing new way.
Take a drive into Riverhead and head straight for Pulaski Street to join the annual celebration at Long Ireland Beer Company. Each year, on Black Friday, their new batch of Russian imperial stout is unveiled. It is called, what else, Black Friday Stout. The sweet, roasty, malty libation offers subtle hints of chocolate and coffee.
Two friends, Greg Martin and Dan Burke, established Long Ireland Beer Company in 2010. The proprietors, both former oil servicemen who longed for a career that incorporated their love of beer, began with home brewing endeavors. In the earlier stages of perfecting recipes, brewing two cases and a time and enjoying half of it, they joked about opening a brewery. The dream was no longer expressed in jest, however, when, over a three-year period, research and development bought their vision closer and closer to reality.
The two men began brewing their beers on a larger scale out of New England Brewing Company in Woodbridge, Connecticut, enabling them to further expand their knowledge working side-by-side with a 20-year brewer and to begin distribution. During this time, an 8,800-square foot building in Riverhead was acquired, renovated and finally opened in 2011. The building is home to a 20-barrel brew house with three 50-barrel fermenters, a bottling line and the tasting room.
Long Ireland Beer Company’s first release was Celtic Ale, their traditional Irish ale. Long Ireland Beer Company has since expanded their portfolio of beers to include a variety of exquisitely crafted brews that include such seasonal delights as a summer raspberry wheat, an autumnal pumpkin ale, winter ale and November’s anticipated Black Friday Stout. Some steady favorites in addition to their flagship Celtic Ale include their Breakfast Stout and Pale Ale.
Long Ireland Beer Company’s tasting room offers tasting flights, and you can tote home one of their filled growlers. Many of Long Island’s restaurants feature some of Long Ireland’s beers on tap, and you can find their bottled beers in beverage stores.
Whether you’re a craft brew aficionado, are boycotting the storewide stampedes this year or you actually brave the shopping malls and subsequently need a refreshing beverage to ease you out of shellshock and into contented beer bliss, the staff at Long Ireland Beer Company is proud to pour your needs. Black Friday stout will begin flowing at 9:00 am on November 29, 2013. Stop in for breakfast and enjoy the stout with beer waffles topped with ice cream and candied bacon. Don’t forget to lug home a growler of one of Long Ireland’s finest to wash down the evening’s turkey sandwich!
